Collective Consciousness
ME theory postulates that the fundamental force governing the quality of social life is the collective consciousness of society. The collective consciousness of a social group is the wholeness of consciousness of the entire group. Each level of society is described as having its own characteristic collective consciousness, such as family consciousness, community consciousness, city consciousness, state or provincial consciousness, national consciousness, and world consciousness Just as the consciousness of an individual determines the quality of his thought and behavior, so also there exists another type of consciousness for a society as a whole; a collective consciousness for each family, city, state, or nation, having its own reality and the possibility of development. The quality of the collective consciousness of a society is a direct and sensitive reflection of the level of consciousness of its individual members.
An illustration of collective consciousness is the common experience that each family has a characteristic feeling associated with it; similarly, the modes of behavior and cultural values of different geographic locations or even nations as a whole are distinctive. The quality of collective consciousness at each subordinate level contributes to the quality of collective consciousness at a higher level. For example, the quality of national consciousness is influenced by the quality of collective consciousness in each state; an agricultural state brings its own unique influence to the national consciousness.

Maharishi spoke yesterday live via satellite and Internet webcast from the Capital of the Global Country of World Peace in Meru, Holland.
Maharishi acknowledged that the world is ridden with problems, but said that through his global peace program, “all conflict and negativity that have gripped the world for centuries is now beginning to disappear—just as the darkness disappears with the dawning sun.”
Maharishi’s global peace plan includes establishing in every country a group of several hundred to several thousand Yogic Flyers to create coherence in collective consciousness—the basis of positivity and invincibility in the nation. (According to research, the number of Yogic Flyers in a group required to create coherent national consciousness is the square root of one percent of the nation’s population. For example, in the U.S. with a population of just over 300 million people, the number of Yogic Flyers is 1730.)
Maharishi’s invincibility program has been under way in Holland with a group of 400 Yogic Flyers for the past three months. Since the program’s launch on April 12, the Dutch press has reported a dramatic and sustained economic boom in Holland, reduced government problems, increased social harmony, and elevated stature in the family of nations.
And now the coherent influence from Holland is spreading to neighboring countries, including Switzerland, where the national press is reporting with great positivity on the efforts of Dr. Felix Kagi, the Raja of Switzerland, to establish an invincibility group of several hundred Yogic Flyers in the nation.
In the U.S., the positive impact of the “Invincible America Course,” which began just four days ago with 1200 Yogic Flyers, can be seen in press reports documenting the unexpected stability and strength of the stock market despite turmoil in the Middle East. “As the number of coherence-creating Yogic Flyers increases towards our goal of 3,000, the news in America will get better and better,” said Dr. John Hagelin, world-renowned quantum physicist and director of the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa.

(JULY 25) More than 1600 peace-creating experts from throughout North America have assembled in Washington, D.C., and in the heartland of America in Fairfield/Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa, to practice Yogic Flying in large groups and create an upsurge of coherence and positivity in national consciousness and radiate an urgently needed influence of harmony throughout the world.
After just two days, the first signs of the success of the assemblies are now appearing in the press, according to Dr. John Hagelin, the world-renowned quantum physicist who is directing the “Invincible America Course.”
News from the First Day:
Positivity Increases and Negativity Decreases
Yesterday, the Associated Press reported that the stock market recorded one of its largest one-day gains of the year, with the Dow Jones skyrocketing 183 points, surpassing the key 11,000 level. CNBC national television headlined the surprising stock market upsurge with “Wall Street Euphoria” and “Blissful Shock.” CNBC added that the only blue chip stock in negative territory was the Phillip Morris cigarette company.
Dr. Hagelin said that such positive news was predicted publicly in advance of the start of the Invincible America Course, on the basis of extensive previous, published scientific research. “More than 50 published studies clearly show that group practice of Yogic Flying by just a small percentage of a population—as little as the square root of one percent—reduces negative trends and strengthens positive economic and social trends,” Dr. Hagelin said.
